   Am                                   F
The small hours of this morning, in the darkness before dawn,
          G                              E
While you slept the sleep of children, untroubled by my waking,
      Am                                       F
I was listening to your breathing, half formed words that you were speaking,
     G                         E                               Am    E
Even had a little smile at the cliche you were talking in your sleep.

       Am                                  F
In the small hours of this morning, before dawn broke over London,
      G                              E
I was blocking out the memories that never seem to bother you,
     Am                                   F
And I walked around the bedroom, felt the coldness of the windows,
       G                              E                               Am
And the coldness made me realise just why you slept so soundly in the dark.

       F                                       G
In the small hours of this morning, streaks of light upon the brickwork,
       E                                     Am
And the milk floats and the first birdsong, I realised I'd got you wrong,
    Dm
And you would always sleep this way,
G                       E                  Am
Sleep right through the small hours of the morning.

  Am                                   F
I thought of that old cliche, nothing ventured nothing gained,
  G                                 E
I ventured twice as much as you and all I gained was pain,
   Am                              F
But thankyou for not waking up and helping me to see,
    G                              E
Why I should say goodbye to you as you slept through the small hours.

       F                                       G
In the small hours of this morning, streaks of light upon the brickwork,
        E                                     Am
And the milk floats and the first birdsong, I realised I'd got you wrong,
   Dm
And you would always sleep this way,
G                       E                  Am
Sleep right through the small hours of the morning.
